Introduction:
As Nankana Sahib gets a mention when we
talk about the place where Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee spent his
childhood, the names of Village Sherpura and Jhoraran brings
the memories of Sant Baba Nand Singh Jee and Sant Baba Ishar
Singh Jee, and our head automatically bows with reverence.
And when we start thinking about the life of Sant Baba
Gurdev Singh Jee, one start thinking about the place where
this most humble, most attractive personality with a divine
glow on the face and a smile that has become the life line
of thousands of Gursikhs of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee, has
spent his childhood. It was Hazro, a small village beyond
Attuck in what later came to be known as the Northwestern
Frontier Province (now a subdivision in Pakistan).

Attuck is the same river that had once challenged the Khalsa
army and Sher-e-Punjab Maharaja Ranjit Singh. It was almost
impossible for the Khalsa army to cross the river. The
Maharaja took a bold decision at the spur of the moment and
ordered his troops to cross the river. The Maharaja was the
first to plunge his horse into the river. He recited Sri
Japji Sahib (beginning part of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee)
and prayed to the Lord for success. The troops followed him.
Before the Afghans could take any action, Khalsa army was
fully entrenched and had the upper hand. The Afghans
retreated in dismay and saying " Toba, Toba, Khuda Khud
Khalsa shud." (God forbid, but it appears, God himself has
turned a Khalsa !)."
In this small village of Hazro lived the family of Babu
Hukam Chand Jee, and Mata Ram Piaree Jee. It was 1934 when
they were blessed with their fourth son, a little divine boy
who is today the greatest of the greatest and is helping
thousands of children of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee get united
with the Supreme Sahib Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee. The whole
family had started calling him Lal Jee, but his grandfather
S. Prem Singh Jee, who himself was a highly enlightened
Gursikh used to call him Guru Ke Lal Jee. The school teacher
once came home and praised to Babu Hukam Chand Jee about the
uniqueness of Baba Jee in the class. He said, “This child
has always been on time, has never fought with any child in
the class, is always thorough with his studies and even
knows the chapters of the book which are still to be
covered. His brain is very sharp. He is so unique and
peaceful as if he is some saint”. Sant Baba Gurdev Singh
Jee’s first name was Bhupinder Singh that was changed by
Sant Baba Ishar Singh Jee later.
After the partition, the family moved over to the beautiful
valley of Kashmir where the snow-capped mountain peaks, have
posed a challenge to the physical prowess of adventures and
in spring nature bedecks the valley with blossom after
blossom, and in the summer the melting snow of the mountains
fill the brooks and rivers with gushing water.
From the childhood Baba Jee was very active in sports and in
particular swimming was his favorite. Once there was a
competition held in the Dull lake of Srinagar for children
in the 13-17 year age group. Among the children one small
but very cute child was equally unique as he was the only
one wearing a Kashehra (baggy underwear). As the competition
started, all the children started trying their best. There
were boats going along side offering biscuits or water to
children if they needed. No one paid any special attention
to this small boy. But after the halfway through many
children gave up, when this boy attracted every one’s
attention. He was swimming faster and faster, never accepted
any water or food and with half a mile left was ahead of
every one. He won the competition, the first prize, lots of
applauds and some even said it is the power of Amrit. But no
one thought at that time that this short, thin but handsome
boy is going to help thousands others to swim through this
Bhav-Sagar (materialistic world) by becoming their guiding
light in the future.
After few years, the family moved to Delhi. Baba Jee
continued his studies and completed his tenth grade in
Delhi. This is where one day he got a chance to listen to
the Kirtan of Bhai Ram Singh Jee. The Kirtan had its effect
as it suddenly touched his pure soul that made him serious
and detached from the world. Family was getting worried at
this change of attitude. One day Baba Jee locked himself in
a room. The whole family tried in vain to get it opened.
Respected Mata Jee was worried, kept requesting, Lal Jee,
please open the door. But the only sound that came out from
inside was that of a sewing machine. Finally the door opened
in the evening, Mata Jee ran inside to see Baba Jee, and
after looking around she found someone behind the door. It
was not the same boy who had closed the door in the morning.
It was a boy wearing a long white Chola (robes) and a white
rounded Dastar (turban), with a smile and a deep
determination in his eyes, a saint looking boy. It was
shocking for the family. Every one had their own set of
questions. Mata Jee was asking Lal Jee take off this Chola.
But the saint boy was quite. Pita Jee came back late in the
evening and got angry. Who stitched it for him? Who gave you
the money? Did you steal this money from somewhere? And then
the saint boy could not keep quite. No, it is from my pocket
money savings. I never eat anything outside with the money
you have been giving me. You have to take off this Chola now
or I will tear it apart or you can not live in this house.
But the saint boy said I will never take off this Chola now
and I am not going to live in this house any more. I have to
go to my own real house. Mata Jee was in tears, the whole
family was surprised, but the saintl boy was telling the
truth. He had made up his mind to break open the shekels of
worldly attachments and get involved in spreading Sri Guru
Nanak Dev Jee’s message throughout the world, and went to
meet Sant Baba Ishar Singh Jee at Nanaksar.
When the Ragi Jatha of Bhai Ram Singh Jee went inside to
meet with Sant Baba Ishar Singh Jee, Baba Jee was watching
the saintly boy very closely and affectionately. He then
asked Bhai Ram Singh Jee to find out if this boy will like
to stay here with us at Nanaksar. When Bhai Ram Singh Jee
approached this young boy and asked him that question, there
were tears in the eyes. Baba Jee has listened to my prayers.
I have already made up my mind to stay here and I have been
praying that if Baba Jee will give me the permission to stay
here. This is my real house. And this was the beginning of
the merger of a great master and a worthy disciple. Baba Jee
used to say that Guru Kamal (capable), Sewak Amal
(obedient), then Rub Shamal (God is present there). After a
few days, Baba Jee asked him, “What is your name?” He
replied, Bhupinder Singh. Baba Jee said, it is not a good
name. It just reminds me of one king. You are going to be a
Gurudev. From then onward his name was changed to Gurdev
Singh Jee as Baba Lehna Jee name was changed to Sri Angad
Dev Jee (2nd Sikh Guru), or Bhai Jetha Jee (4th Sikh Guru)
name was changed to Sri Ram Das Jee. From that day onward
Gurdev Jee got so much deeply absorbed in Baba Jee’s sewa as
if nothing else was of any importance. Sant Baba Ishar Singh
Jee was very happy with the dedication and devotion with
which Gurdev Jee was doing sewa. He was always available, on
his feet, had forgotten about sleeping or eating, was nice
with every one, was full of humility and always anxious to
do whatever sewa was asked from him.
One day Sant Baba Ishar Singh Jee was at Jhoraran. There was
Bhai Bawa Singh Jee, Jathedar Mukhtiar Singh Jee, Gurdev Jee
and couple of other people in the room. Suddenly Baba Jee
said, Bawa let us give you something today. Or you all will
say that I gave you nothing and told you nothing. Every one
was surprised. Bhai Bawa Singh Jee started laughing thinking
it is a joke. Sant Baba Ishar Singh Jee again said, let us
do the formal Rasam (ceremony) or else you will doubt it in
the future. Baba Jee asked Bawa to bring a Dastar (turban),
Kesar, Mishree, Narial (Coconut) and sweets for
distribution. Bawa Singh Jee went inside and brought every
thing as per Baba Jee’s instructions. Baba Jee then asked
Gurdev Jee who was sitting quietly, by calling him as Thakur
Jee, to come close and spread your Chola. Gurdev Jee obeyed
and Baba Jee poured every thing in his lap. Baba Jee then
dissolved the Kesar and gave a Tilak on Gurdev Jee’s
forehead and called him “Thakur Jee, Thakur Jee” 2-3 times.
Thus Master changed the Sewak in to Thakur, and Sewak was in
tears, full of appreciation and love for the Master. Baba
Jee then ordered Gurdev Jee to tie the Dastar on his head
and asked every one to bow to him. Thus Baba Jee transformed
his most capable Sewak to Thakur Jee.
Thus, Sant Baba Ishar Singh Jee passed the responsibility to
Sant Baba Gurdev Singh Jee to continue spreading the message
of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee after him. After Sant Baba Ishar
Singh Jee, went to Sachkhand, Sant Baba Gurdev Singh Jee
went to village Samadh Bhai as per instructions of his
Master. From here Baba Jee started working very aggressively
to fulfill his responsibilities. Today with Grace of
Almighty, there are 17 new Nanaksar Gurdwaras, (9 in India
at Samadh Bhai, New Delhi, Dehradun, Pune, Bhadaur, Seerah,
Kandila, Bagthalla and Banwala Anu and 8 abroad, two
(Houston, TX and Fresno, CA) in USA, three (Winnipeg, MB,
Brampton, ON and Surrey, BC) in Canada, two (Birmingham and
Southall) in England and one in Nairobi, Kenya), all are
functioning with full Maryada (established services) that
Sant Baba Nand Singh Jee started and thousands of devotees
visit these Gurdwaras daily and listen to Kirtan and learn
how to become true Gursikhs and take blessings of Baba Nand
Singh Jee and Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee.
